Our Budget Outlook

This is a draft spreadsheet presented to the Board of Trustees Budget Committee at its meeting on May 19, 2010 by the Office of Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration forecasting the District’s budget for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 fiscal years and identifying anticipated deltas in expenditures for 2010-11. The College is expected to pass an preliminary budget at its June board meeting.

A Deficit of Another Kind

As our state grapples with another crippling budget deficit this year, we must keep something else in mind.

In 15 years, California will face a deficit of another kind: 1 million college graduates.  This problem is not unique to our state, however.  The United States ranks 23rd out of 24 post-industrial countries in college graduation rates.  A deficit of college graduates is not just about education policy; this deficit threatens economic growth, global competitiveness, as well as our national security.  Recognizing this problem, President Obama set a goal to have the highest rate of college graduates in the world by 2020.
